"My interest in engineering grew while finishing my graduation in computer science when I was just one of the ten girls in the class. During the time in 2007, AI & its applicability was making its presence felt in India. To explore it further, I went on to get a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning (ML) from IISc.
After my masters, I worked closely with several US-based healthcare institutes exploring the possibilities of AI in the health domain. At the time, one of my cousins was detected with #BreastCancer. Within a few months, my husband’s cousin too was detected with breast cancer. I was taken aback, & I decided to look at breast cancer more closely. We found out several drawbacks in the existing procedures of #screening breast cancer i.e. thermography. Several healthcare institutions didn’t use #thermography due to the prevailing accuracy issues. I estimated that the accuracy issues of thermography could potentially be tackled with imaging & AI.
Building up a small team, we started studying breast thermography as an exploratory project. We decided to use AI for identifying the tumour’s location. In 2017, I launched #Niramai to develop the quintessential solution.
Today Geetha Manjunath is leaving no stone unturned to make early breast cancer detection capabilities & solutions accessible to women. Geetha & her team are steering the way to make women aware of breast cancer & inculcating in them the habit of prioritizing controlled machines to perform the screening. This helped women to get comfortable with the whole process which helped in the early detection. With the help of an AI-based method, we can now accurately analyze thermal images in 10-15 minutes to detect cell malignancy. Our #innovation helped cut the screening cost by a third."
